Switzerland SG724 Entry into Confederation 20c

SG724

FACEBOOK - STAMP THING - SWITZERLAND

Issued on 1 June 1965, this single stamp commemorates the entry of Cantons Valais, Neuchatel and Geneva into the Swiss Confederation. This emerged from the collapse of the Napoleonic Helvetic Republic and these were the last three cantons to join the Swiss confederation. Apart from a few minor border adjustments between 1815 and 1854 Switzerland adopted its current status and borders in 1863, although there have been attempts by border areas in other countries to join since (in France, Austria and Italy). A new canton (Jura) was formed in 1978, but this was carved out of the French speaking part of Canton Bern, after a political campaign that included some violence.
