SG1395

Issued on 12 May 1998 this single stamp celebrates Switzerland's National Day, the First of August. The design shows Switzerland themed decorations. The day is a bank holiday and events take place throughout the confederation. The date is inspired by the date of the Federal Charter of 1291, Pacte du Grutli, placed in "early August", when "three Alpine cantons swore the oath of confederation" (Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden), an action which later came to be regarded as the foundation of Switzerland.

FACEBOOK - STAMP THING - SWITZERLAND

Issued on 1 June 1965, this single stamp commemorates the entry of Cantons Valais, Neuchatel and Geneva into the Swiss Confederation. This emerged from the collapse of the Napoleonic Helvetic Republic and these were the last three cantons to join the Swiss confederation. Apart from a few minor border adjustments between 1815 and 1854 Switzerland adopted its current status and borders in 1863, although there have been attempts by border areas in other countries to join since (in France, Austria and Italy). A new canton (Jura) was formed in 1978, but this was carved out of the French speaking part of Canton Bern, after a political campaign that included some violence.

Switzerland 2007 Roger Federer, Tennis World Champion 100c

SG1720

Swiss Post has presented the special Roger Federer stamp to the public. Chief Executive Officer Ulrich Gygi presented the tennis player from the Basel region with his special present at Basel town hall. This is the first time ever that a living person has been depicted on a Swiss stamp. The stamp, with a face value of one franc, is available now.

Swiss Post has lifted the secret surrounding the Roger Federer special stamp. Chief Executive Officer Ulrich Gygi unveiled the picture at Basel town hall and presented Roger Federer with a large-format stamp. The 1-franc stamp shows the world's number one tennis player holding up the winner's trophy at Wimbledon.

Swiss Post's special stamp is a unique gift to Roger Federer. It is the first time that it has issued a stamp featuring a living person. Roger Federer has been the number one in the tennis world for over three years longer than any other player. With his sporting successes and his activities off the court as UNICEF ambassador, for example he has done a great deal to promote the image of Switzerland abroad in recent years. This is why Swiss Post is dedicating a stamp to this exceptional sportsman.

Swiss Post announced on 26 February 2007 that it would be issuing a Roger Federer stamp. However, the actual picture to be featured remained a secret until it was presented to the tennis player.

Switzerland SG1601 2004 UEFA 1f.30

UEFA's roots in Switzerland for the majority of the past 50 years have been commemorated with the unveiling of a special Swiss postage stamp to mark the European football body's Golden Jubilee.
Nyon ceremonyThe stamp was handed over to UEFA CEO Lars-Christer Olsson by Dominique Freymond, member of the board of directors of Swiss Post, at a ceremony at UEFA's House of European Football in Nyon, western Switzerland on Tuesday.
FIFA and UEFAThe designer of the stamp, Wolf Henkel, and Switzerland's national Under-21 coach Bernard Challendes were also present at the ceremony. A similar event also took place at the Fraumünster post office in Zurich, where Swiss Post presented world football's governing body FIFA with a stamp marking FIFA's 100th birthday this year.
More than 40 years in Switzerland
UEFA was founded in the Swiss city of Basel in June 1954. The body has been based in Switzerland since the start of the 1960s, after moving from its original home in Paris. UEFA's first Swiss home was the federal capital Berne, where it stayed until 1995 when it switched to Nyon, on the banks of Lake Geneva. A spell in temporary premises in the town was followed by the body's move to its own headquarters, the House of European Football, in autumn 1999.
Part of Swiss life"This is a very important event for UEFA," said Lars Christer-Olsson, who is leading UEFA through its Jubilee year after taking over as Chief Executive at the start of January. "It is a way of showing that UEFA is part of Swiss life, because this is where we were born, in the same year as the [FIFA] World Cup in Switzerland in 1954.
Football in action"We are very grateful to Swiss Post. We are happy that the stamp shows football in action. We care about the game, football has to be promoted, and the stamp is an excellent way of doing this."
Fantastic sport"Swiss Post could not ignore the fact that UEFA is celebrating its 50th birthday," said Mr Freymond. "Millions of Swiss people attend football matches, in rain or snow. Football is a fantastic sport which nurtures competitive spirit, team spirit and the will to win. It is a sport that brings different people together. The stamp's design perfectly portrays the characteristics of this sport."
Design challenge"It was quite a challenge to design the stamp," Mr Henkel explained. "I literally looked at dozens of photos until I found the right figures and images which would link together the old and the new. I hope that everyone is happy with the way the stamp has turned out."
Jubilee eventsThe launch of the Jubilee stamp is one of many activities and events that are taking place throughout UEFA's 50th birthday year. These include publications, videos, grassroots events and special ceremonies, many of which will feature European football greats of the past half-century.

2012 Jungfraubahn

Swiss Post is issuing a special stamp to mark the centenary of the Jungfraubahn. The cog wheel railway to Jungfraujoch is still an impressive piece of engineering one hundred years after its opening. What began with a bold idea has developed over time into a major attraction which pulls hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Other new stamps feature the beaver, the 100-year anniversary of the Pro Juventute Foundation, and one of the cornerstones of life in Switzerland, the Swiss Civil Code. These and all other stamps in the current issue are valid from 8 March 2012.
The Jungfraubahn is, without exaggeration, a masterpiece of engineering and it is not only train enthusiasts for which it has long since been a source of inspiration. The route, which is just over 9 kilometres, takes you up 1,393 metres in altitude from the station at Kleine Scheidegg, cuts through the Eiger and the Mönch, and offers fantastic views before stopping at Jungfraujoch, the summit of the Jungfrau. At 3,454 metres above sea level, it is the highest railway station in Europe. At the end of the 19th century, the construction of the railway was merely a dream envisaged by Adolf Guyer-Zeller, an entrepreneur from Zurich. Thanks to his perseverance, it became a reality. After much work the tunnel finally broke through at the beginning of 1912, and on 1 August of the same year, the cog wheel railway began operating.

The railway as a tourist attraction

In the last 100 years, the Jungfrau Railway has made a name for itself all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of tourists each year are comfortably transported to the Jungfraujoch - a pleasure that was previously reserved for experienced mountain climbers only. Swiss Post is dedicating a special stamp - fittingly worth 100 Rappen - to the Jungfraubahn Railway on the occasion of its 100-year anniversary. The stamp depicts one of Jungfraubahn Railway's famous red trains with the sun shining on the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the background.

2007 300th Birth Anniversary of Leonhard Euler (mathematician)

SG1719  Issued 6.3.2007

On March 6, 2007 Switzerland issued a stamp to commemorate the 300th Anniversary of the birth of Leonhard Euler (1707-1783). Stamp design based on a portrait. The pastel likeness on which the Euler special stamp is based was created in 1753 in Berlin by the talented Swiss portrait artist Emanuel Handmann (1718-1781) and shows the great scientist – Euler had already lost the sight of his right eye – in a remarkably spontaneous mood, dressed in a silk housecoat. The image of a polyhedral body at which Euler seems to be looking and the equation “e – k + f = 2” (in English, V [ertices] - [Edges] + F [aces] = 2) recall one of his best-known discoveries in elementary mathematics, Euler’s polyhedral formula (in our example, V = 12, E = 19 and F = 9). In a letter to his friend Christian Goldbach dated 14 November 1750, Euler first refers to the fact that the relationship between the number of edges, vertices and faces of a body – more specifically a convex polyhedron – is always the same, describing it as “H + S = A + 2”. Several years later, he published and proved this relationship in the journal of the St. Petersburg Academy. This was one of the first general statements about those characteristics of geometrical shapes which are independent of relative proportions so do not vary, even when deformed. Euler thus founded a new branch of mathematics known as “combinatorial topology”. Like several of Euler’s discoveries, the polyhedron formula is one of the best known mathematical theorems ever. This small indication of what the impressive mind of man in the portrait produced is intended as a contribution to perpetuating the memory of this great scholar born 300 years ago in Basel. Martin Mattmuller, Euler Archive, Basel.
